Spring 2013
Late last year a special brew of Havercake
Ale was produced to celebrate the return of
the 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment after
a gruelling six months in Afghanistan. 10p for
every pint sold was donated to the Yorkshire
Regiment Fund and in the end over £6000
was raised.
Soldiers of the regiment, formerly the Duke
of Wellington’s Regiment, have always been
known as the ‘Havercake Lads’ The nickname
derives from the oatmeal bread or haver cake
which for centuries was a staple food in the
Yorkshire Pennine towns and villages where
the soldiers were mainly recruited.
Thanks to the support from Enterprise Inns,
the robust ale quickly sold out in the selected
pubs that stocked it whilst the bottled supply
was snapped up by Tesco. Demand was so
great that Head Brewer, Peter Eells, has been
asked to prepare for another special brew for
the Autumn.
